How Two Deep Water Wells Serve A Community Overrun By Gangs.
Although gang violence and economic turmoil has forced us to move our children’s shelter and main hub of operations to northern Haiti, Chanje Movement continues to have a presence in central Haiti and to serve people in the communities where we started.
One of the ways we continue to have an impact is by distributing 8 million gallons of fresh water every year through deep water wells. We’ve built two wells, one on our Field of Dreams property and one on the property of our partner church (name will not be disclosed publically for safety). Pastor F recently shared this story about the water well on his property (edits added for clarity).
Hello my brothers! In Jesus, we are well even [though there are] problems we are facing here. Everyday we give water to more than 300 families. 50 gallons per family. That mean we give around 15,000 gallons per day. We are giving water to 2 locations. Around the church and around the orphanage [run by the church]. All glory to God. The water we give in the area contributes a lot to the security of our church assembly. It is the water that we give their children, their women use. At the moment, only our church is able to give water to the community. They do not pay anything to find water. The gangs ask their soldiers not to attack our church because it is the church that provides water to the population. For us, this is a good testimony. The church at the service of the community. Not only water, but also hot bread, education and food almost every day.
The water well on the Field of Dreams (pictured above) is serving 200 families a day. Even the gangs get water from this well and are always peaceful and respectful when they come. This has created a safe space in the midst of intense violence and chaos.
We’re so thankful for the opportunity to continue to provide for the needs of Haitians in central Haiti and to be a beacon of peace and love.
